German philosopher whose The Philosophy of "As If" argued that we operate by useful fictions — models known to be false but retained because they work.

Wilson's model agnosticism has a respectable philosophical ancestor, and this is it. Holding a model "as if" true, while knowing it is not, is the position the whole corpus keeps circling.
