Signal reaction vs symbol reaction

A signal reaction fires immediately and identically each time, like a reflex to a bell. A symbol reaction includes a delay in which the sign is evaluated in context.

Korzybski's prescription — the "delayed reaction" — is this distinction turned into a practice: insert the pause, and a conditioned response becomes a considered one.
