Contains, half a century before Borges, a nation that made a map on the scale of a mile to the mile — then never unfolded it, because the farmers objected that it would blot out the sun. They now use the country itself as its own map, and Carroll notes it does nearly as well.

The joke arrives first. Carroll gets there in 1893, Korzybski argues it in 1933, Borges perfects it in 1946.
