The title track's opening verse contains the line "one magical movement from Kether to Malkuth". Bowie was reading Crowley in this period and drew the Tree of Life on the studio floor.
⭐⭐⭐ THE PERFECT DEMONSTRATION OF THE MECHANIC, AND IT IS EIGHT WORDS LONG. Trace them: Kether and Malkuth in that transliteration reach Bowie through Crowley, who has them from the Golden Dawn, who have them from Mathers' English of Knorr's Latin of 1677, with Lévi's 1855 table welded on in between — and behind all of it, the Hebrew כתר and מלכות. Six stops, three hundred years, four languages, one line of a pop song. And the direction of travel is the whole point: the movement from Kether to Malkuth is the descent of the light into the world. Bowie, whatever else he was doing, got the direction right.
One magical movement from Kether to Malkuth.

whyMalkhut, because that is where the line ends and where the song is — the descent completed, in a recording studio in Los Angeles.
