"Who by Fire" is built on the Unetaneh Tokef, the liturgical poem recited on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. "You Want It Darker" answers with הנני, hineni — here I am, Abraham's word at the binding — and was recorded with the cantor and choir of the synagogue in Montreal that his family helped build.
The wing's proof that none of this requires a diagram. Cohen is a kohen who knew the liturgy, went to a Zen monastery for five years, and came back to the machzor. ⭐ Set his chain beside Bowie's. Bowie's runs six stops through two Latin books and a French occultist to produce a magnificent line about the sephirot. Cohen's runs one stop, from a prayer his grandfather sang, and produces a song sung at funerals. Both are in this wing and neither is the model for the other.
