Ong's Hat

A set of documents — the Incunabula papers — describing a commune in the New Jersey Pine Barrens, a device called the Egg, and a group who had walked out of this universe into a parallel one. Distributed on BBSes and photocopies with no author, no frame and no disclaimer.

⭐⭐ ARGUABLY THE FIRST ALTERNATE REALITY GAME, AND THE ONLY WORK IN THIS WING THAT SUCCESSFULLY BECAME A BELIEF. People drove to the Pine Barrens looking for it. It is the exact structure of every esoteric claim on both descendants' benches — hidden adepts, a document you were not meant to see, a doorway that was open briefly and has closed — assembled deliberately, by people who knew what they were building, and released without a label. It is the control experiment for this entire app, and the result is that the form works whether or not anything is behind it.
