Pi
nature
Darren Aronofsky's first film. A number theorist chasing a pattern in the stock market is approached by Hasidic scholars who are running gematria on the Torah and searching for a 216-digit number they identify with the Name.

One of the very few widely seen films whose Jewish esoteric material is actually Jewish. Gematria is real and old; the 216 letters of the Shem ha-Mephorash derived from Exodus 14:19–21 are a real construction; the anxiety about what happens to a person who finds the Name is the tradition's own anxiety, and the film ends where the tradition warns it will. ⚠ Which does not make it accurate — it is a thriller, and it treats the Name as a password. But its chain is short and its sources are the right ones.
