Fanāʾ & baqāʾ · annihilation and subsistence

fanāʾ / baqāʾ
nature
Two halves of one movement. Fanāʾ: the passing-away of the self that was standing in the way. Baqāʾ: the subsisting afterwards in God — coming back with the ordinary faculties working, able to buy bread and teach a class.

The Kabbalah's bittul ha-yesh is the same double movement, and the second half matters as much in both: an annihilation you do not return from is, in either tradition, a failure and not an attainment. Junayd's whole school is built on the return.

Tehiru is a walk-in model of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life and its kindred ways — built to be explored, not read. This page is a still frame of one node; the app is where it moves.
