Duties of the Hearts
nature
Ten "gates" — unity, reflection on creation, service, trust, sincerity, humility, repentance, self-examination, abstinence, and the love of God — written in Judeo-Arabic in Muslim Spain and translated into Hebrew by Judah ibn Tibbon a century later.
The crossing that is still in the building. Its material and structure are drawn openly from Muslim pietist writing, and it became one of the most widely studied devotional works in all of Judaism — read today in yeshivot by people who would be startled to be told where the gates came from. The traffic is not a footnote in this relationship. It is load-bearing.
