THE ATLAS OF THE POLISHED MIRROR
Junayd of Baghdad
Junayd
nature
The measured architect of the Baghdad school, and the founder of what later Sufis call the way of sobriety: whatever is given in ecstasy must be carried back into ordinary life and lived under the law. He taught in Arabic careful enough to survive inspection, and he outlived several friends who did not.
The counterweight to every intoxicated line in this pack. Both temperaments run through the tradition — sober and drunken — and Judaism has the same argument, between the ecstatic and the halakhic, in nearly every century.
Sufism is that God should make you die to yourself and make you live in Him. — attributed, in the classical manuals
