THE ATLAS OF THE POLISHED MIRROR

The Light Verse (Qurʾān 24:35)

the Light Verse
nature
"God is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The likeness of His light is as a niche wherein is a lamp, the lamp in a glass, the glass as it were a glittering star, kindled from a blessed tree, an olive neither of the East nor of the West, whose oil would almost shine even if no fire touched it. Light upon light."

The verse the whole tradition grows its imagery out of — and the sharpest unforced convergence on the cousins' bench. A Kabbalist reads light upon light, an olive that gives oil that shines untouched, and a lamp inside a glass inside a niche, and recognises the grammar immediately: degrees of light, each veiling and transmitting the one above. No borrowing in either direction. The image was simply there for both.
اللَّهُ نُورُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ — God is the Light of the heavens and the earth… Light upon light.
