THE ATLAS OF THE POLISHED MIRROR
Shihāb al-Dīn Suhrawardī
Suhrawardī
nature
Founder of the ishrāqī — Illuminationist — school, who rebuilt metaphysics out of light: not as a metaphor but as the basic term, with everything that exists ranked by luminosity and every lower light standing in the shadow of a higher one. He was executed at Aleppo at thirty-six, and is called al-Maqtūl, the killed.
The closest anyone outside Judaism comes to the Kabbalah's native vocabulary. The Zohar is a book about light, degrees of light, and lights that give rise to lights — and here is a Persian doing the same metaphysics a century before it, with no traffic between them that anyone has found.
