Waḥdat al-wujūd · the oneness of being

waḥdat al-wujūd
nature
The phrase later attached to Ibn ʿArabī's position: that there is one Being, and everything called a thing is a mode, a disclosure, a face of it — not a second thing standing beside God. Fiercely contested inside Islam ever since, and defended by its friends as the opposite of pantheism rather than a form of it.

The Hasidic formula ein od milvado — "there is nothing else besides Him" — is doing very nearly the same work, and drew very nearly the same objections from very nearly the same direction. Both traditions had to answer the charge that they had dissolved the world.
