The "Old Master" — a keeper of the Zhou archives who, the legend runs, rode west on a water-buffalo and, begged by the gatekeeper, left five thousand characters behind before vanishing. Historians doubt he was one man at all; the Daodejing reads as a composite gathered over generations.
The headwater of the whole tradition, and the voice of its first and deepest claim: the Way that can be named is not the eternal Way.
The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name.
