THE ATLAS OF THE SOCIETY THAT SPLICED

Christos Without the Church

Christianity
nature
Blavatsky's treatment of Christianity is the most aggressive thing in her books. Isis Unveiled volume II is largely a sustained attack on ecclesiastical Christianity — its history, its councils, its suppression of the Gnostics — while holding that Christos is a principle, an impersonal state of the awakened soul available to anyone, and that the Gnostics had it right before the Church buried them.

The clearest single instance of the core-and-husk move in action, on the tradition her readers actually belonged to. Note what it does: it lets a Victorian keep Christ and discard the Church, with the discarding framed as recovery rather than apostasy. That is now the default religious position of a very large number of people in the West — "spiritual but not religious" is this argument, ninety years later, with the reading list removed. ⚠ And it links straight to ✧ the Gnostics, where the app already holds the material she was reaching for, with the scholarly dispute intact.

whyGevurah is the cut — and this is a cut made through the middle of a religion, separating what is kept from what is discarded.
