The Society for Psychical Research sent Richard Hodgson to Adyar in December 1884 to examine how the Mahatma Letters arrived. His 200-page report concluded they were produced by human means, accepted the testimony of the Coulombs about sliding panels and a doctored cabinet, and described Blavatsky as "one of the most accomplished, ingenious, and interesting impostors in history."
