THE ATLAS OF THE SOCIETY THAT SPLICED

The Motto, and Where It Came From

the motto
nature
Satyāt Nāsti Paro Dharmaḥ — rendered by the Society as "There is no religion higher than truth." It was adopted as the motto of the Theosophical Society, and taken from the family motto of the Maharajahs of Benares.

A small node that carries the whole argument. The sentence is a real Sanskrit motto and the English is a choice — dharma is being translated as "religion", which is exactly the move the wing runs on: a word meaning duty, law, order and the way things are, rendered as one of the things the Wisdom-Religion is said to stand above. ⚠ The translation is defensible and it is not neutral, and the app's rule is to say so rather than to pick a side.
