Nachmanides (Ramban)

Talmudist, physician, communal statesman — and the kabbalist whose prestige made the tradition respectable. Won the Barcelona Disputation (1263) and was exiled for winning; rebuilt the Jerusalem community. His Torah commentary's sealed hints ("by the way of truth") let the mainstream absorb Kabbalah slowly, like medicine dosed.
