σπινθήρ — the spark; also pneuma, the breath. The Gnostic claim about the human being: buried under the body and under the soul there is something that did not come from here — a fragment of the fullness, smuggled into the clay, asleep and unaware of itself. Not a faculty, not a virtue, not the conscience: a piece of the source, in the wrong place, that can be woken. Everything else in the system exists to explain how it got here and how it gets out. The Lurianic Kabbalah says something so close that the honest reader has to stop and consider it: nitzotzot, sparks of the primordial light, held inside kelipot — shells — scattered through creation and through every person, waiting to be raised. Same image, same word-family, one thousand four hundred years apart, and no demonstrated channel of transmission. And then the parting: the Gnostic spark goes home, and the Lurianic spark gets raised where it fell — you free it by eating with intention, by doing the mundane thing rightly, by staying. One tradition's liberation is the other's abandonment of the post.
