The most audacious move in the Gnostic corpus is not a doctrine — it is a reading technique. Take a verse everyone knows and invert the assumption about who the narrator is. "Let us make man in our image": a plural, which the rabbis read as God consulting the heavenly court and the Sethians read as the seven powers conspiring. The serpent: tempter, or the first being in the story to tell the humans the truth about what the fruit does. The expulsion: punishment, or a jailer removing the newly-awake from a garden that was a pen. "I am God and there is no other beside me": majesty, or a boast that gives the boaster away. Judaism has its own doctrine of multiple simultaneous readings — PaRDeS, four levels held at once, where the plain sense is never destroyed by the deep one. The difference is the crucial one: PaRDeS reads with the text and the Sethians read against it. But both are built on the same starting conviction — that the surface of scripture is not the whole of it, and that reading is an act with consequences. This app gives you the machine and lets you run both.
