δημιουργός — "craftsman," a word Plato used admiringly in the Timaeus for the maker of the cosmos, and which the Gnostics kept while turning it. In their telling the world's maker is Sophia's solitary offspring: competent, industrious, genuinely the author of everything visible — and ignorant of what is above him. His characteristic line, quoted in several texts as the exact words of Isaiah 45 and Exodus 20 turned against themselves: I am God and there is no other beside me. In the Secret Book of John a voice answers him from a height he cannot see, and his mother is grieved by what he has said. Reference node. This app describes the figure historically and does not treat it as a power to be addressed, resisted or invoked; there is no rite on this bench. The Kabbalah is worth hearing on the same question — it refuses the split absolutely, holds that severity and mercy are one source's two hands, and reads the plural of "let us make" as the divine consulting its own court rather than as a conspiracy. That refusal is the fork in the road where the two families walk away from each other.
