The seven · the walls between
correspondences
nature
The seven planetary spheres — Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn — which the whole ancient world agreed stood between the earth and the fixed stars, and which the Gnostics alone read as walls. Each sphere has its ruler, its gate and its toll; the soul descending picked up a garment of qualities at each one (anger from Mars, appetite from Venus, cunning from Mercury) and must give each garment back on the way up. The list of names survives in Origen's hostile description of the Ophite diagram, and the challenge-and-answer at the gates survives in the Gospel of Mary and the First Apocalypse of James. The Merkavah mystics climbed exactly the same seven, in the same centuries, in the same eastern Mediterranean — and called them palaces. Same number, same gatekeepers, same requirement to produce the right word at the door. One tradition is escaping a prison; the other is being admitted to a throne room. That single difference in framing is worth more than a hundred pages of comparison — and this wing models both, side by side, so it can be seen rather than argued.
