The Silent Seer. Ayin is the alphabet's other silence — but where Aleph is silent like sky, Ayin is silent like a well. He is the eye and the spring (both ayin in Hebrew): seeing as a form of water. Seventy nations, seventy faces of the text, all reflected in one dark iris.
Ayin came paired with sin lurking in his words (avon, iniquity, begins with him) and stood aside. But so does Anavah — humility — and so he was made the eye: the organ that cannot see itself.
