The Gardener. Chet is a fence with a narrow gap in the roof — life (Chai, 18 = two Chets... no, Chet-Yod) escapes upward through him even as he encloses. He guards growing things fiercely and is the gate of both chesed (kindness) and chet (sin): the same enclosure, tended or untended.

Chet stayed back, for with him begins Chet — sin — and he would not put that at the root of the world. Yet with him also begins Chaim, life, and Chesed; so he was planted as the fence around every living field.
