The Ninety-Nine Names
correspondences
nature
Al-asma al-husna, "the most beautiful Names" — the Merciful, the Just, the Subtle, the Avenger, the Patient — counted on the tasbih's ninety-nine beads, three rounds of thirty-three. For Ibn Arabi they are not decorations but the very structure of manifestation: the unknowable Essence knows itself and is known only through its Names, and every created thing exists as the trace of some Name seeking display. The Kabbalah runs the same grammar through its own ropes of Names — the 72 unfolded from three verses of Exodus, the 42 from the opening of Genesis — and both traditions keep a Name in reserve: the tasbih's hundredth, hidden; the Tetragrammaton, unpronounceable. The count differs. The claim — that the Infinite meets the world as an array of Names, and one Name is always withheld — is the same.
