Dhikr · the remembrance
correspondences
nature
The central Sufi practice: the rhythmic repetition of the divine Name — aloud in gathered circles or silently on the breath — until remembrance becomes the heart's own pulse. La ilaha illa'Llah swept out on the exhale, Allah or Hu drawn in. The Quran's warrant: "Remember God with much remembrance." Its Hebrew cousin is hazkarat ha-Shem, and its closest working parallel in this app is Abulafia's tzeruf — the cycled permutation of the Name with ordered breathing and movements of the head. The resemblance is not loose: Abulafia's manuals prescribe breath-technique the Jewish sources before him do not, written in the same century and the same East where dhikr technique had been systematized for generations. This is the practice where the fence between the cousins is lowest.
