Fana and Baqa · annihilation and abiding

The summit of the Sufi path stated without flinching: fana, the annihilation of the self in God — the drop returning to the ocean, nothing of the lover left to say "I". And then the teaching's finer half, which outsiders forget: baqa, abiding — the servant given back, walking in the market, outwardly ordinary, inwardly extinguished-and-subsisting in the Real. The Kabbalah knows the state as bittul, the nullification of the self in the Ein Sof's light, and Chabad maps its degrees with a jeweler's precision. But it also posts a warning at the gate the Sufis storm: of the four who entered the orchard, ben Azzai gazed and died. The Tree's ideal is ratzo va-shov — touch the flame, and return to tend the world. One tradition's summit is the other's cautionary tale, and each thinks the other stops too soon.
