Ishq · the love that annihilates

Sufism's engine is not knowledge but love — ishq, the love that does not negotiate: Rabia's torch and bucket, Rumi's seventy thousand verses to the Beloved's face. The path's stations are a lover's biography — yearning, jealousy, complaint, union — and God is addressed throughout as Thou, in poetry hot enough that the jurists kept trying to put it out. The Kabbalah's Ein Sof is beyond address; its love-poetry finds another way and courts the Shekhinah — the Sabbath bride welcomed at dusk, the exiled queen mourned at midnight — while devekut, cleaving, names the union. Both traditions discovered that the mystic's most precise instrument is not the syllogism but the love-song; they differ on where to send the mail.
