⭐⭐ 613 → 11 → 6 → 3 → 2 → 1 — the Gemara takes its own number apart

Immediately after giving the number, Makkot 23b–24a begins reducing it. Each prophet is said to have established the whole Torah on fewer principles.

DAVID — eleven. Psalm 15: "He who walks blamelessly, and does what is right, and speaks truth in his heart…"

ISAIAH — six. Isaiah 33:15: "He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, who despises the gain of oppressions, who shakes his hands free of holding a bribe…"

MICAH — three. Micah 6:8: "To do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God."

ISAIAH AGAIN — two. Isaiah 56:1: "Keep justice and do righteousness."

AMOS — one. Amos 5:4: "Seek Me and live."

HABAKKUK — one. Habakkuk 2:4: "The righteous shall live by his faith."

⚠⚠ And the Amos rung is struck out mid-descent by Rav Naḥman bar Yitzḥak, on the daf, before the passage finishes. A descent with no objection in it would be a smoother story and a false one. See taryag-amos.

⭐⭐ Note what the ladder is not. It is not a reduction of the law to a slogan — nobody on this page says the other 612 lapse. It is a claim about what the whole thing rests on, and the fact that the Gemara can run it six ways and then quarrel with one of them is the point.

And it does not end at the vanishing point. It ends with Rabban Gamliel weeping and the Sages answering him from the grammar — see taryag-gamliel.
