⚠ 248 limbs — and what the Talmud does not say
correspondences
nature
Everybody quotes it as 248 limbs and 365 sinews — the whole Torah laid over a single human body, positive commands in the organs, prohibitions in the tissue that binds them. It is old, it is beautiful, and Makkot 23b does not say it.
⭐⭐⭐ What the Gemara says is that the 365 prohibitions correspond to the days of the solar year. It does not say sinews. Only the positive half is a body on that page. The other half is a calendar.
The sinew version is later, and it is a genuinely different picture with a genuinely different claim in it. A body says: the commandments are the anatomy of a person. A year says: the prohibitions are the shape of a life as it is lived through time — every day of it, one after another, whether or not anything happens.
⚠ This app draws both and labels which is which, because the difference is the whole question of whether the Torah is being mapped onto a body or onto a year, and a room that only drew the tidy version would be repeating the error it went to the daf to catch.
⚠⚠ And a second honesty note the room repeats: the tradition gives a count, not a chart. Where any particular commandment sits on the figure is ours — a reading aid, not a received map. Nobody in Makkot says which limb is which mitzvah.
