⚠ 248 and 365 in the Kabbalah — reported, not adopted

The two numbers are worked hard by the mystical literature, and the readings are worth knowing and worth keeping at arm's length.

· The 248 positive are read as the limbs of Adam Kadmon, so that performing one repairs a limb of the primordial body.
· The 365 prohibitions are read against the 365 days and, in the later authors, against the sinews — each restraint holding one strand of the same figure together.
· Together, 613 is read as the full articulation of a single form, so that the commandments are not a code laid over a person but the person's own structure written out.
· The Lurianic authors add the birur reading: a commandment performed lifts a specific spark out of a specific shell, so the 613 are a map of where the sparks fell.

⚠⚠ Every one of these is reported here and none of them adopted here. They are readings by named schools, mostly Zoharic and post-Lurianic, and they are doing something quite different from Makkot 23b — R. Simlai is preaching a number, they are building a cosmology on it.

⚠ And the provenance is genuinely open: this app has not pinned the earliest source for the limb-by-limb correspondence, and says so rather than citing "the Zohar" as though that were a page reference. When it is pinned, this node changes and the date on it changes with it.
