The tradition's own drash, and the deepest rhyme the cave has in Hebrew: olam, world, shares its root with he'elem, concealment — the world is not where light is absent but where light is hidden. A cave is exactly that: not darkness, but an architecture for keeping a sun unseen. Where the two houses part is everything: for Plato the concealment is a misfortune to escape; for the Kabbalah it is deliberate — tzimtzum hides the light precisely so that something other than light can stand, and the Shekhinah dwells specifically in the lowest room. The cave as prison, or the cave as womb: same floor plan, opposite blessing.
