Not "illusion" in the cheap sense of a hallucination — the world is there, it just is not what it presents itself as: an independent multiplicity. Māyā is the power by which the one appears as many, and the rope is seen as a snake until the light improves. The Kabbalah has veils too — the kelipot, the shells that hide the light, and olam itself sharing a root with he'elem, concealment. But the difference is total and it decides everything downstream: the shells conceal a real world that was made on purpose and is worth mending. You cannot repair an appearance. Tikkun olam requires that the olam be there. Said fairly: Hasidic acosmism ("there is nothing but Him") comes closer to Advaita than most Jews are comfortable admitting — and still keeps every commandment binding on a world it calls unreal, which is a tension it never resolves.
