Boundless giving. Chesed, also called Gedulah (Greatness), is the first day of creation — "a day entirely of light" — expansion without restraint. Its danger is its own virtue unchecked: love that drowns what it loves. The Zohar's ethics turn on this: even mercy must be vesseled. Abraham is its body in the world; hospitality its liturgy; water its element.

"The world is built by Chesed" (Psalm 89:3) — the Zohar reads creation itself as an act of uncontained generosity that the remaining days must shape.
