Sophia · the fall of Wisdom
correspondences
nature
The last and outermost of the thirty aeons, and the one who breaks the pattern. Her fault is not sin, greed or rebellion — every source is careful about this. It is love in excess of its measure: she wants to know the Depth directly, immediately, alone, without her partner and without the mediation the other aeons accept. The reach tears her out of the fullness. What she brings forth by herself is formless — a ruler who does not know there is anything above him — and her grief, remorse and turning-back become the substance from which the lower world is condensed. She is then either restored, or partly restored, or remains in exile as Sophia Achamoth, the lower wisdom, scattered in the world she caused. Set this beside the shevirat ha-kelim: vessels that shatter because the light poured into them exceeded what they could hold, sparks fallen into the shells, and a divine presence — Shekhinah — in exile with them. Two catastrophe-myths, both blaming an excess rather than a crime, both leaving light stranded in the wreckage. And then the parting that decides everything: the Gnostic story ends in escape, and the Lurianic story ends in repair — the same broken world, and a completely different job.
