The fold — face between the knees

1 Kings 18:42 — Elijah on Carmel, after the fire: "and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees." The text gives it as what he does while waiting for rain, and says nothing about technique.

The Hekhalot literature takes it as one. The descender to the chariot is described sitting with the head between the knees, whispering hymns — and modern scholarship (Scholem above all, and the discussion since) reads the posture as doing real work: a sustained fold that shuts out light, sound and the field of view, held while a rhythmic text is repeated. Whatever else it is, it is a technique for removing the world.

And here is the shape of the thing, which the app has stated in prose for a long time and never once drawn. The journey is called yeridah la-merkavah — the DESCENT to the chariot — and the palaces it passes through go up. Watch the body do it and the paradox stops being a paradox: the mystic climbing seven heavens is, from outside, a person folding downward into himself. The two arrows are opposite and there is no contradiction, because they are not measured in the same space.

⚠ A real posture and a real spine. The room draws it; if you try it, go slowly and go gently, and there is no duration anyone should be holding.
