The Torah before the world
correspondences
nature
Bereshit Rabbah 1:1 reads Proverbs 8:30 — where Wisdom says she was amon beside the Holy One — as uman, craftsman. And it puts the sentence in the Torah's own mouth: "I was the working tool of the Holy One."
The parable it gives is architectural and completely concrete. A king who builds a palace does not build from his head; he works from an architect's plans. So the Holy One consulted the Torah and created the world — which means the Torah is not a book about the world. It is the drawing the world was built from, and it was finished first.
⭐ This app has carried the same claim about the letters since long before it could draw it. Every one of the twenty-two letters holds an audition — the Zohar's opening, where each comes before the Holy One in turn asking to be the instrument with which the world is made, and is answered. That is not decoration on the alphabet. It is a doctrine of what the alphabet is: something that existed, and argued, before there was anywhere to stand.
Layer: the midrash is late-antique (c. 5th c.); the Zohar's letters are 13th-c.; Proverbs 8 is far older than either and says nothing about Torah. The chain is a reading built on a pun, and a magnificent one — but the pun is doing real work and should be visible.
