⭐ The shofar — a sound the tradition lost, and kept anywayשופר

nature
The obligation is not to blow it. The blessing is lishmoa kol shofar — to hear the sound of the shofar. One person blows and a room full of people perform the mitzvah with their ears. Compare the Written Torah, which must be taken in through the eye. Here the duty is on the ear, and the blower is only the instrument.

It is also the sound at the mountain: Exodus 19:16 and 19:19 — the shofar grows louder and louder as the mountain smokes. The same scene where the people are said to have seen the voices.

⭐⭐ And then the astonishing part, which is a matter of law and not of legend. The tradition lost the sound. The Torah says to make a teruah and does not say what a teruah is. By the amoraic period nobody could settle it: was it three broken groans (shevarim), or nine staccato bursts (teruah)? Or — a further doubt — both together?

R. Abahu's ruling (Rosh Hashanah 34a) was not to choose. Blow all three combinations — tekiah-shevarim-teruah-tekiah, tekiah-shevarim-tekiah, tekiah-teruah-tekiah — so that whichever one it was, it was sounded. Every Rosh Hashanah since, what a congregation actually hears is a preserved uncertainty, performed.

⚠ And it is not unbounded. The Gemara rules out one order on the grounds that the teruah imitates human crying, which goes from sob to wail and not the reverse. The doubt is real; the constraint on it is what a person actually sounds like when they weep.

This app has a habit of reporting a dispute and refusing to settle it — the serpent-rack, the sway, the direction of the wrapping. Here is the tradition doing the same thing, in the third century, in sound, and making it law. We did not invent the manner. We inherited it.
