Havdalah — the seam of the week, taken in through four sensesהבדלה

At the close of the Sabbath the division is marked with a short ceremony that is, unusually, addressed to the whole body at once:

Taste — a cup of wine.
Smell — spices, passed round and inhaled.
Sight — a plaited flame, and the hands turned so the light catches the fingernails: you are asked to look at the difference between lit and shadowed on your own hand.
Hearing — the blessings themselves, and the rule that one may fulfil the obligation by listening to someone else say them.

⭐ Note what the ceremony is about: havdalah means separation — between holy and ordinary, light and dark, the seventh day and the six. And the way it teaches a distinction is by making you perform one with every sense you have. The content and the method are the same shape.

Set beside the rest of this appendix it is the counter-example that keeps the seeing/hearing split from becoming a law of nature. The tradition can and does use all the senses at once when it wants to. The split between the Talmud's ear and the Zohar's eye is a fact about two literatures, not about Judaism.
