תא שמע — come and hearתא שמע

The Bavli's formula for bringing a text to bear: ta shma — come and hear — and then a taught tradition is produced to press against the argument in progress.

It is the correct verb for what the Talmud is. This is the Oral Torah, Torah she-be'al peh, Torah by mouth. It was carried in memory, argued aloud, and learned in a chant — the give-and-take has a tune, and generations have known a sugya by its melody as much as by its words.

Hebrew helps the argument along: שמע — shama means hear, and it also means understand, and it also means obey. One word for all three. Which is why the central declaration of the whole tradition begins with it, and why the body's response to it is to cover the eyes — see pose-eyes.

⚠ And then the formula outlived its own medium. The Talmud in front of you is a book. It still says come and hear. A fossil of the mode it used to be in.
