nature
The running Aramaic commentary on the Torah that forms the bulk of the Zohar: Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and his companions walking the roads of Galilee, meeting donkey-drivers who turn out to be sages, reading every verse as news of the sephirot. Composed in Castile in the 1280s–90s (Moses de León's circle; scholarship now sees layered group authorship), set in 2nd-century Galilee — a work of visionary pseudepigraphy so successful it became, for centuries, simply "the holy Zohar." The Pritzker Edition (Daniel Matt, 12 vols, 2004–2017) is its first full critical translation.
